Meet Anya. We adopted her earlier today from the San Jose Animal Care Center. She is very sweet. She has her playful moments, but most of the time she just wants to lay in your lap and chill out. We haven't heard her bark yet. She is crashed on the bed right now. She's had an exciting day.

As I mentioned back in February, links management has been overhauled in 2.1. Along with this overhaul comes some new API for retrieving and listing links/bookmarks. get_bookmarks() fetches bookmark objects from the database, and wp_list_bookmarks() lists the bookmarks in your sidebar. These new functions are more flexible and featureful than the previous links API (which still remains for backwards compatibility). Hopefully this added power will mean that theme authors won't need to write their own custom functions and database SELECTs. Using SELECTs in a theme rather than using API means that theme is not protected from database schema changes and might not work correctly with future versions of WP. Something I've seen in several themes is this:

$wpdb->get_results("SELECT cat_id, cat_name FROM $wpdb->linkcategories");

That will not work in WP 2.1 because there is no longer a linkcategories table. Link categories now live in the categories table along with post categories. If you use the API, you won't notice the difference. Themes that do the SELECT shown above will need to add some compatibility code if they want to support both 2.1 and versions prior to 2.1. Example:

if ( function_exists('wp_list_bookmarks') ) {
	wp_list_bookmarks('arg1=x&arg2=y');
} else {
	$cats = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT cat_id, cat_name FROM $wpdb->linkcategories");
	...
}

If your theme uses the get_links_list() function you are safe and don't need to do anything to your theme. If you are doing something custom that involves direct SELECTs from the database, however, look into the new bookmarks API. get_bookmarks() and wp_list_bookmarks() are still under development but are coming along nicely. If you are testing 2.1 alpha, try them out in your theme and help us shake out the bugs.

During the 2.1 development cycle, we've been tidying up our includes. They had gotten rather messy, with a bazillion functions being piled into the functions.php catch-all. Go take a look at trunk and see how things have changed. functions.php is much slimmer, and we have a few more files. We tried to separate the presentation from the backend logic a little better. For example, comment functions that perform DB operations go in comment.php. Comment functions that spit out markup go in comment-template.php. Pretty straightforward. All of the "big query" and "post loop" related functions are gathered in query.php. Rewrite functions are in rewrite.php, plugin functions are in plugin.php, and so on. This is nothing that end-users care about, but I feel cleaner.

The nice thing about working for a virtual company is that I can do my job wherever I can find a broadband connection. So, if I want to take off for Southern California and do some sightseeing I can still get work done while at the hotel. I took my new Canon SD630 along and snapped lots of pictures of Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Joshua Tree National Park, Palms to Pines Highway, and San Diego Wild Animal Park. Yes, I did get some work done while out touring. Honest.

I’m really liking the SD630, by the way. It’s a nice little point-and-shoot with a big LCD screen on the back. It doesn’t have an optical viewfinder, but I rarely use viewfinders on point-and-shoots anyway. I picked up a fast 1 GB SDIO card that allows fairly rapid shooting thanks to the higher write speed.
